"I think the idea of me is better than the reality of me"(25).
The people the read Lowan's books find it hard to separate her as the author and her main character. Her ex-boyfriend fell in love with the character she created and came to a harsh realization that Lowan is nothing like the women she writes about. Lowan feels that she will never be good enough until she meets Jeremy, the man that accepts her for who she is.
Grief
Jeremy and Verity lose two of their three children in tragic accidents. Neither of them had enough time to process their first daughter's death before their second daughter drowned in the lake outside their home. Manipulation Verity writes in her manuscript from a malicious point of view, in which she plays games with Jeremy's mind. She manipulates him so much that when Lowan finds her letter, she cannot tell if this was just another one of her tricks, or the truth. Secrets Jeremy and Verity's relationship seemed fine from the outside, but their relationship was full of secrets and lies. Verity continuously hid things from Jeremy, according to her manuscript, and Lowan hides the manuscript from Jeremy when she finds it. Both of these relationships were built on fragile lies and secrets. |
